My dream ‘Vette, the C5 Z06, was actually intended to be the poverty spec (hence the fixed roof instead of convertible option). However, because the C5 was so successful compared to the end of the C4, they didn’t need to have a super cheap version of the new Corvette. So rather than throw out this model that was without any creature comforts and happened to be the lightest and stiffest version of the car, Tadge Jeuchter and team gave the model the Z51 package as standard and then made the car into the Z06 which revitalized that badge into the track weapon we know it as today.
Just think, if people hadn’t of bought the C5 during the first couple years, the Corvette Z06 would actually be the name for a sub-base model Corvette. Imagine the C7 being $55k then the Z06 coming out 18 months later as a de-contented, manual only model for $48k with lease rates matching a mid-range Malibu!
Yeah, that actually sounds great...take it away, Tadge!

There’s also that minor difference under the hood.
The FRC is a cool car on its own. I wonder how many are left that haven't been turned into drag/track toys.

That’s so anti-Porsche philosophy, I love it! I wish there was a stripper version now, maybe the GS will fill that void

Interesting video. I never knew the story of the C5 Z06. That being said, the phrase “poverty spec” is definitely one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to automotive writing. If you are truly living in poverty, I don’t think you’re in the market for a brand new sports car in any trim level. I’ve seen the phrase used occasionally around here, and I’m pretty sure it’s just in reference to a car without many of the creature comforts and gadgets that we now feel entitled to in every car. “Manually adjustable side mirrors? What is this, a car for peasants?"
